Organization

History

The Durham Business Association founded in 1996, promotes the interests and concerns of the business community in the greater Durham area. Members include business owners, professionals, university and town representatives, and community members interested in promoting a healthy business community.

The mission of the Durham Business Association (DBA) is to encourage business and professional people to work together in a planned manner with both the Town of Durham and the University of New Hampshire to advance the economic well being of the community.

For approximately four years DBA partnered with the Durham MainStreet. After the Durham MainStreet program dissolved in January, a steering committee of DBA formed to regroup, reorganize, and redefine our mission. The steering committee met regularly for several months reviewing the events and activities of the association, updating the bylaws and hiring a part time Director. Members of the steering committee are excited to have hired Shirley Lamarre, our new director.

The signature events and activities of DBA include Light Up Durham, an event that kicks off the winter holiday season and includes a community dinner, family activities, lighting of the tree downtown, a pancake breakfast and other activities promoting community spirit. Another activity includes the Freshman Coupon Stuffer where members of DBA submit coupons which are included in the freshmen orientation package. The Young Artists’ Showcase is a weekend activity providing local young people the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent. DBA participates in the University activities welcoming back students. Members of DBA are actively involved in the University program Durham It’s Where You Live, a partnership between the Durham community and the University of New Hampshire.

Libby’s Restaurant welcomed our quarterly meeting in April where approximately sixty DBA members and community members gathered. Members approved our updated bylaws and voted on the following officers and the Board of Directors; Dick Houghton, Houghton Hardware, President, Jane Faix, Ocean Bank, Treasurer, Cellissa Hart, Growing Places, Secretary. Additional board members include Paul Berton, Hotel New Hampshire, Chuck Cressy, durham marketplace, Warren Daniel, The Bagelry, Roger Hayden, Hayden Sports, Gregg Sanborn, University of New Hampshire Representative, Todd Selig, Town of Durham Representative, and Janna Stevens, Health Spirit Wellness Center. Attendees heard a presentation from Jennifer Murray about the University program Durham It’s Where U Live. Through this program numerous activities are planned throughout the year promoting community spirit and serving as a catalyst for better connections between UNH students and their surrounding community.

We are encouraging past members to rejoin and welcoming new members to DBA. To learn more about the Durham Business Association or to attend a quarterly meeting, contact
